David began running Happy Dogs North East over 20 years ago to learn about different breeds of dog and their behaviour. He served many years as a police dog handler in a county constabulary. David is one of few people named on John Rogerson's web site to take training consultations, and he has just returned home after spending four weeks with John in India both as a student bringing his methods and ideas up to date, and as an assistant instructor on the CSI course. He is a dog behaviour trainer and professional dog-training instructor. What you may want to know about us

Happydogsnortheast is a small business run by me, David Davies. I keep my business small because I want to deliver you the best dog training and behavioural experience possible. I take the calls, and I give the advice. It will be me that calls to see you or that you come to for training. All my consultations are unless otherwise requested run one to one. I do not believe a client can possibly be given enough attention if part of a group, and the bigger the group, the more the client may be under helped.
I have held an interest and love for dogs my entire life. I have trained and worked with dogs most of my adult life, and for seventeen years dogs were the bread and butter and tools of my trade. I owe dogs much. For over twenty years I have made a living from working with dogs in one form or another. Whilst I love and enjoy what I do, this is my income. I don’t do this as a hobby or to supplement my salary. I make a living doing this because I am confident in what I deliver and have a good client base.
Come to me for help and I will give honest opinion, based on a lifetime of experience in the world of dogs. I will not talk about dominating, wolves, or anything of that nature. What I will do is to get you to understand your dog, why it behaves as it does, and help you learn how to have a better relationship with it. You will love the journey!
Happy dog ownership
David

Teaching your dog

Training a dog is not about making it perform in a particular way, it is about influencing it to make it WANT to perform for you!

Have a look at your dogs breed - then ask yourself 'what was he/she bred for?

You probably can now answer for yourself - the reason it is behaving the way it is!!!
  • decide upon what to teach
  • ask yourself 'why you want to teach it!'
  • find a suitable reward (remember, this doesnt have to be food, touch, a toy. It can be whatever the dog wants at the time)
  • gain dogs attention
  • show what is required
  • give verbal prompt or command
  • mark correct response as it occurs
  • reward by appropriate method
  • when a dog finds something leads to a reward, it increases the chances that it will do it again

    unwanted behaviour
    • if feasible and behaviour is unwanted, make it impossible for the dog to do!!
    • interrupt to stop
    • train an alternative (re-direct) and reward
    • exercise extreme self control

A loved, guided satisfied dog is happy, full of life, and manageable!

"He who knows the answer to the question how shall I say this to my dog has won the game"
    Max Vom Stephanitz.
